Lange 1

Asymmetry after the Golden Ratio

The Lange 1 was the face of the brand's 1994 rebirth: an off-centre dial in which no display overlaps another, and a large date modelled on the five-minute clock of the Dresden Semperoper.

History

The evolution of the Lange 1

In 1994 A. Lange & Söhne presented four models marking the brand's re-founding. The Lange 1 immediately became its signature model.

The layout follows the golden ratio: main time, small seconds, power reserve, and large date are arranged so they never overlap.

The large date, with its two separate discs and the bridge between them, became the most widely copied feature in modern watchmaking.

A second generation followed in 2015 with Calibre L121.1 and a synchronously jumping large date. Variants such as the Lange 1 Daymatic, Grand Lange 1, and Lange 1 Mondphase expanded the family.

Collector's perspective

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

Early 1994 examples with Calibre L901.0 are historically significant and specifically sought by collectors.

  2. 02

Platinum versions with rhodium dials are rarer than yellow gold and rose gold.

  3. 03

Since all cases are precious metal, material loss from polishing is the most critical value factor.
