Speedmaster

The first watch on the Moon

The Speedmaster is the only chronograph whose durability has been certified by a space agency. Its history is documented without gaps — making it one of the most accessible entry points into serious collecting.

History

The evolution of the Speedmaster

In 1957 the Ref. CK2915 arrived as part of a trio of professional tool watches. Its distinguishing feature: a tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than the dial.

In 1965, after testing under extreme heat, cold, vacuum, vibration, and acceleration, NASA qualified the Speedmaster as the only watch for manned spaceflight — Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions.

On July 21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore the Speedmaster on the lunar surface. During Apollo 13 in 1970, it was used to time a manual engine burn, for which Omega received NASA's Silver Snoopy Award.

The manual-wind calibre remained largely unchanged for decades: 321, then 861, then 1861. Since 2021 the Moonwatch has run on the Master Chronometer-certified Calibre 3861.

Collector's perspective

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

The Speedmaster offers an exceptionally strong ratio of historical significance to entry price.

  2. 02

On vintage references, the calibre is decisive. Models with Calibre 321 command markedly higher valuations than later examples with 861 or 1861.

  3. 03

Replaced hands, dials, and bezel inserts are very common. Omega's Extract of the Archives clarifies the original delivery configuration.

  4. 04

When buying vintage, look for the original Hesalite crystal. A later sapphire replacement diminishes collector value.
