Yacht-Master

Nautical precision in precious metal

The Yacht-Master translates the language of the tool watch into a more luxurious context: raised numerals on a polished bezel, precious metal instead of pure steel — and, with the Yacht-Master II, one of the most complex regatta functions on the market.

History

The evolution of the Yacht-Master

In 1992 the first Yacht-Master appeared as Ref. 16628 in yellow gold. It adopted the Submariner's design language but forwent its diving function in favour of a bidirectional bezel with raised, polished numerals.

1994 brought the Ref. 69628, the first Rolex sports watch in an explicitly smaller format, followed in 1999 by the Rolesium variant in steel with a platinum bezel.

In 2007 Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master II: a regatta chronograph with a programmable countdown from one to ten minutes and mechanical memory, controlled via the Ring Command bezel.

2015 brought the Yacht-Master 40 in Everose gold with a Cerachrom bezel and the Oysterflex bracelet — a rubber strap over a flexible metal blade.

Collector's perspective

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

In perception, the Yacht-Master is less overheated than the Submariner or GMT and therefore often offers a more favourable price-to-execution ratio.

  2. 02

The Rolesium variant with its platinum bezel is a Rolex peculiarity and unique on the market in this combination.

  3. 03

On the Oysterflex bracelet, check the rubber surface for cracking at the lugs — the typical wear point.

  4. 04

The Yacht-Master II is functionally demanding. A documented service matters more here than on the three-hand models.
