Ballon Bleu
The round form with the cabochon set into the case
The Ballon Bleu is Cartier's most successful modern design: a round, softly curved form, in whose case flank the crown with its blue cabochon is embedded — protected by its own arch.
The evolution of the Ballon Bleu
Introduced in 2007, the Ballon Bleu broke with Cartier's usual formal rigour. Curves replace edges, and a freestanding crown gives way to a solution integrated into the case.
The characteristic crown-guard arch extends onto the dial, interrupting the row of Roman numerals — a detail that makes the design instantly recognisable.
From the outset the line was offered in multiple sizes, from 28 to 46 millimetres, making it one of the brand's most gender-neutral collections.
Over the years, executions with diamond-setting, skeletonised movements, and rose and white gold as well as two-tone variants have followed.

What to look for when buying
- 01
The Ballon Bleu is not a classic investment piece, but one of the most wearable Cartier watches and very well represented on the secondary market.
- 02
On diamond-set executions, check whether the setting is factory-original. Cartier documents this on the certificate.
- 03
The polished case surfaces show scratches quickly. Professional refinishing is comparatively straightforward on this shape.
- 04
Larger executions from 40 millimetres with an automatic movement trade noticeably more stably than the quartz variants.
