Panthère

Jewellery piece and watch in one

The Panthère de Cartier is less a timepiece than a bracelet with a dial. Its exceptionally supple link bracelet sits against the wrist like a second skin — a design born of the jeweller's craft, not watchmaking.

History

The evolution of the Panthère

Introduced in 1983, the Panthère developed the Santos design language further, but with an entirely new link bracelet made of many small, articulated elements.

The panther has been Cartier's heraldic animal since 1914, introduced by Jeanne Toussaint, the long-serving head of the jewellery department.

Through the 1980s and 1990s the Panthère was one of the signature watches of its era. After being discontinued in the early 2000s, it rose to become a highly sought-after vintage object.

In 2017 Cartier relaunched the collection true to the original, in several sizes and in executions with diamond-setting and in yellow, white and rose gold.

Collector's perspective

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

Vintage Panthère pieces from the 1980s form their own collecting field with sharply increased demand.

  2. 02

The bracelet is the critical point. On heavily worn examples it shows play and loses its characteristic drape.

  3. 03

On two-tone executions, wear on the gold elements at the bracelet edges is the most common flaw.

  4. 04

Make sure the folding clasp is original. Replacement clasps are hard to source for vintage models.
